BETZ Volodymyr Oleksiyovych

Professor Volodymyr Oleksiyovych Betz (1834-1894) was a disciple of O.P.Valter and a head of the Department of Anatomy of St.Volodymyr University from 1868 to 1890.

V.O.Betz was born on April 26, 1834 in village Tatarivshchyna (in the suburbs of Oster) of Chernigiv gubernia. He originated from a Ukrainian noble family, where democratic views were upheld. He gained the secondary education at Nizhyn and 2nd Kyiv Gymnasiums. In 1853 he entered the Medical Faculty of St.Volodymyr University, from which he graduated with honors and got a medical degree. Owing to great success during his studying at University, a talented graduate-doctor was sent on a foreign business trip to Vienna. In 1862 V.O.Betz came back to Kiev and the next year he defended a doctoral thesis at University.

V.O. Betz was a well-educated scholar, a skillful experimenter, a talented researcher, a brilliant lecturer and a demanding teacher, who went through the European school of scientific and pedagogical training of the world-renowned scientists:  Brücke, Hyrtl, Bunsen, Kölliker, Kirchhoff and Helmholtz.

Due to his erudition, the ability to find novel original ideas, the range of V.O. Betz’ scientific interests was extremely broad. At the beginning of his research and pedagogical activities, Volodymyr Oleksiyovych Betz successfully worked within the fields of physiology, chemistry, morphologic sciences.  For some time V.O. Betz gave lectures on analytical chemistry, uroscopy and histology to doctors and students at university. Having defended the doctoral thesis “On the Mechanisms of Circulation in Liver” in 1863, he showed his deep knowledge not only in the sphere of anatomy, but also in physics. A part of this work of Ukrainian scholar, devoted to hydraulic calculations, was once published in the Proceedings of the Vienna Academy of Sciences. Volodymyr Oleksiyovych has made valuable researches of adrenal medulla (he discovered a chromaffin reaction), the researches of osteogenesis morphology and, particularly, the studies of micro- and macroscopic anatomy of brain.

Throughout his scientific and pedagogical activity V.O. Betz was always in touch with practical medicine. Being a brilliant clinician, from 1871 he worked as consultant of nervous diseases at St.Cyril hospital, and later on – as head physician of  the South-Western Railway.

V.O. Betz’ multifaceted activity did not hinder, but even helped him in the main field of his work – the studies of the structure of brain. It is generally recognized that brain is, perhaps, the most complex structure of living ones in the entire Universe. This is why the nervous system has always been the focus of scientists and researchers. Meanwhile the statement of the famous Italian anatomist of the XVII century F.Fontana about the brain remained relevant until the end of the 19th century: “obscura textura, obscuriores morhi, functiones obscurissime” (which can be translated as “vague structure, even more obscure properties, the most incomprehensible functions’).

In the 19th century the targeted objective study of the nervous system functions was begun (mostly the brain and the spinal cord); with the basic data being obtained from anatomical and histological researches.

At that time the theories on the cerebral cortex were developing within the framework of two opposing concepts – antilocalizationism (or equipotentionalism) and localizationism. Before Betz’ works on architecture there were no reliable anatomical proofs of cortex division into separate structural units. Many experimenters, when observing the facts of functional dissimilarity of different areas of cerebral cortex, did not correlate them with definite morphological structures and, as a rule, discussed these findings according to the Meynert’s theory of heuristic parallelism, which defined the phenomena of consciousness and material processes as completely different things.

The close relationships among physiology, anatomy, histology of the central nervous system and clinical findings of nervous diseases were obvious for V.O.Betz, who said in the introductory lecture on anatomy on September 22, 1870: “If physiology is not the anatomy-based branch of science, then any theory that tries to explain one physiological phenomenon or another will be totally scattered in the face of the first anatomical term… The anatomy of the brain requires systemized data, their more detailed explanation, and the interpretation of numerous facts that are known for a long time, but are single like milestones without inscriptions”.

Correlating the structure and function, V.O. Betz was the first in the world to begin the researches of cytoarchitechtonics of cerebral cortex. The Betz’ discovery of giant pyramidal cells in layer V of the precentral cortical gyrus and paracentral lobule of the brain cortex in 1874 became an epoch-making event in the history of neuroanatomy of the 19th century.  V.O. Betz not only founded these cells (which were called Betz’s cells), but also proved that they were a morphological substrate of motor center regulating the activity of skeletal muscles, first described by Fritsch and Hitzig. Thus, Volodymyr Oleksiyovych became the founder of the doctrine of morphological foundations of dynamic localization of functions in the cerebral cortex. It should be mentioned that V.O. Betz made this discovery at the same time when his contemporary, a well-known Austrian anatomist J. Hyrtl wrote in the book “Manual on Human Anatomy with the Indications for Its Physiological Basis and its Practical Implementation” (1878): “At present and, perhaps, in the future, the anatomy of the internal structure of the brain may be compared with a book written in hieroglyphs and sealed with seven seals.  As to its functions, even the most proud physiologists humbly bow their heads and admit that the only thing they know about the human soul is that the latter has no wings”.

In the article “Оn the Details of Structure of Cerebral Cortex of Humans” (1882) V.O Betz has mentioned: “… according to my observations, the cortex of anterior precentral gyrus and paracentral lobule contains giant cells, assembled in groups looking like clusters”. It should be emphasized that, until now, the discussion is still being held in neuroanatomy on who was the first to formulate the principle of columnar motor cortex structure – Vernon Mountcastle in 1960 or Laurento de Nό in 1943. There is every reason to believe that Volodymyr Oleksiyovych Betz was the first to suggest it.

Betz used Marchi device to prepare histological sections and investigated the vertical connections between neurons of different layers of the cortex, describing them in his article in such a way: “Anterior central gyrus from the upper border of the lower one-third of its length has the following features: firstly, large cells (giant pyramidal cells) appear in this region in the superficial part of layer V; these cells appear as single units or in pairs, and these pairs are localized at considerable distances from each other. Further, these cells are grouped in clusters containing three or four units, and the spacing between these clusters decreases. In more upward parts, these nests are made up of greater number of cells; at least 4, but sometimes 5 or even 7. From the former site, i.e. the superficial part of layer V, these clusters enter layer III and are localized in the latter as an interconnected stratum, and single cells enter layer II and also layer IV and an upper part of layer V. In the paracentral lobule this stratum is again divided into clusters, which occupy different positions”.

Nowadays in the scientific publications and textbooks on neurology it is noted that vertically oriented columns of neurons are the basic functional cells of the motor cortex, but, unfortunately, there are no references to the scientific priority of Betz in this question.

It should also be emphasized that Volodymyr Betz was the first to raise a question, remaining a live issue even today, about the structure of the gray matter of an important part of the limbic system – the horn of Ammon (hippocampus). Ukrainian morphologists found out that pyramidal cells of Ammon’s horn were located opposite one another and looked like a ball, therefore the scientists called them “glomeruli corticales». Modern neurologists highlight that Ammon’s horn is the most epileptogenic part of the whole brain. In addition, the pyramidal neurons of Ammon’s horn play a significant role in memory functions and genesis of mental disorders.  Strange as it may seem, but the data on cytoarchitectonics of Ammon’s horn, obtained by Betz, are not mentioned even in specialized modern review publications on the anatomy of limbic system.

The study of microscopic structure of cerebral cortex brought the world-wide fame to Kyiv scientist. Volodymyr Oleksiyovych has worked out an original methodology of brain hardening and nervous cells staining, that allowed him to make unique histological preparations, to systematically study the brain hemispheres relief and to establish the patterns of cortex cytoarchitecture. Having applied the elaborated methodology, V.O. Betz  made plaster brain casts (using real brains), then drew lines on their surface, which indicated not only the direction of microscopic sections, made by him, but also the boundaries of separate cytoarchitectonic brain regions. This allowed the scientist to establish exact correlations between the peculiarities of the brain surface shape with the peculiarities of microscopic structure and location of the component parts of separate areas.

A further development of neuroanatomy showed that detailed study of the gray and white matter of the brain, the connections between them, was also related to the researches of series of successive sections across the whole hemisphere. The solution for these problems was obtained due to applying the architectural method of Betz and implemented via the study of histological preparations, which the scientist himself described in this way: “…Due to these preparations there arises a perfect opportunity to observe the layered distribution of the gray and white matters, which is known to be an incredibly important, but also an incredibly difficult part of descriptive anatomy – there was hardly a person to undertake these researches”.

At Congress of Naturalists and Physicians in Leipzig in 1872 a famous professor K. Ludwig examined the collection of V.O. Betz and offered him to print an atlas of figures of his specimens at the expense of Dresden Academy of Sciences. But the Ukrainian scientist rejected this offer, cherishing a hope to print the Atlas in his home country. For his preparations V.O. Betz was awarded a large silver medal at the All-Russian manufacturing exhibition in 1870 in St. Petersburg and the “Fortschritts Medaille” at the Vienna World Exhibition of 1873, where the collection was valued at 7000 Austrian guilders. Being a true patriot of his native country, Volodimir Betz refused the offer of professor V.Benedikt to sell the collection of histological preparations. He presented this collection to the Department of Human Anatomy of Bogomolets National Medical University, where it is still kept together with a proof and, unfortunately, unique copy of “Atlas of human brain” (1890).

Medical Scientists of the whole world do realize the value of Betz’ scientific heritage. It is generally admitted that a famous representative of Ukrainian medicine V.O. Betz promoted the development of national science, made remarkable achievements in his home country and was a member of the global scientific and educational elite.

The life of V.O. Betz is a bright example of self-sacrificing work for the sake of anatomy, in which the scientist saw also another science – the philosophy of anatomy. V.O. Betz clearly realized the danger of speculative philosophy, which sacrifices the facts for the immanent logics of explaining scheme. Following the eminent French anatomist K.Biсhat, whom V.O. Betz called “the great maestro of the study of human nature”, the Ukrainian anatomist believed that philosophical method is a reflection, i.e. the thinking of the subject on the experience of his/her activity and realizing of the meaning of this activity for themselves. The philosophy of natural science, for instance, is a reflection on the experience of nature knowledge, while the philosophy of anatomy – on the experience of anatomy research. To make this reflection (thinking) productive, one has to follow one essential condition: a philosopher must have the expertise of his own in a sphere that is the subject of his reflection. Otherwise, the creative thinking is simply impossible, because the absence of personal experience leads to the borrowing of other people’s thoughts and arguments without verifying their accuracy, to approximate judgments and intellectual dilettantism.

Advancing the requests of the unity of experience and philosophical generalization, V.O. Betz had every reason to state that his own activity meets this demand in full.

The words from the introduction to one of his last publications – the monograph “On the morphology of Osteogenesis”(1887), are considered to be a kind of testament of Volodymyr Oleksiyovych: “And for a person, who will enter after me the doors of the temple, where, according to Sylvyi, “even death rejoices the fact that she contributes to life”, let this essay be an indication that the anatomy may be viewed not only as a completely defined descriptive or applied science, that is privileged to serve the medical practice, but also as a knowledge, which Hamlet described to Horatio in this way: “’There are more things in Heaven and Earth,  than are dreamt of in your philosophy”.

V.O. Betz passed away on October 12, 1894. The tomb of the great scientist is located on the slopes of the Dnieper in the picturesque and secluded corner of Vydubychi Monastery in a few steps from the Church of Archangel Michael – it was the last will of V.O. Betz.
